Sewing Project – Car Seat Organiser

If you’re anything like me, your car probably feels more like a mobile storage unit than a vehicle. I often find that I have more clothes, gadgets, gym gear, and random essentials stashed in my car than in my actual closet! That’s where DIY car organiser sewing projects come in handy. They’re a game changer for decluttering your space and giving everything a designated spot—especially behind your seat. Not only do they help you stay organised, but you can also add a personal touch with beautiful fabric and a custom embroidery design to make your car look stylish and functional.

Pattern Information

Pattern: Butterick 6228 Car Organiser
Material: Cotton and iron-on interfacing
Skill Level: Beginner
Embroidery Pattern: Urban Threads Embroidery Design

I created this car organiser a few years back using a Butterick pattern, which is now available as a PDF download through Sew Direct, rather than the Simplicity website. But don’t worry if you’re after something similar—there are plenty of great car organiser sewing patterns on Etsy, offering a variety of designs to suit your style and needs!

Embroidery Designs

One of my absolute favourite embroidery design sites is Urban Threads. I love how modern, fun and genuinely stylish their designs are — they never feel tacky, dated or dorky. Everything has a fresh, contemporary edge that works beautifully with the kinds of projects I love to create.

When I was planning this piece, I came across the “All I Need Is the Beach and a Book” design and instantly knew it was the one. It paired perfectly with the Hawaiian floral fabric, bringing together relaxed coastal summer vibes in your car!

I’ve also previously used the “Beach Please” embroidery design on my Senna Tote beach bag — clearly I have a bit of a beach-theme obsession!

I created this project on my Brother Innov-is NV800E, which is an amazing embroidery machine, perfect for designs that fit up to 160mm x 260mm.

Project Photos

You can tell just how long ago I made this project by the CD tucked into one of the pockets — talk about a throwback! It definitely takes me back to a time when burning playlists was a regular activity.

That said, I genuinely wish I still had this organiser today. It would be perfect for keeping all my gym essentials in one place — gloves, water bottle, sunglasses, hair ties and all the other bits and pieces that somehow end up scattered across the back seat of my car. It’s funny how the projects you make years ago sometimes turn out to be exactly what you need now!

I could also imagine a car seat organiser like this would be a fun kids sewing project, especially if you travelling with kids to and from school or going on holidays. Also, just an enjoyable project to make if you’re pairing it with an embroidered design! I hope you enjoy!
